If you don’t have enough jawbone density to successfully support dental implants, your dentist might be able to help with a bone graft. During this treatment, bone material from another part of your body or an external source will be gently integrated with your jaw, essentially adding mass to your oral structure.

It’s a cool procedure and all, but you might be more concerned about whether you need one or not! Keep reading to learn who might need a bone graft before getting dental implants.

Prolonged Tooth Loss

After you lose a tooth, the jawbone actually starts to deteriorate due to a lack of stimulation. Over time, the loss can become quite significant, to the point where you might not have enough density to support dental implants.

Heavy Smokers/Tobacco Users

The chemicals in tobacco products are known to interfere with your body’s natural healing processes and damage the oral cavity. Depending on how frequently you smoke, vape, or chew tobacco, your jawbone could be dangerously thin. It will also likely take longer for bone graft material or a dental implant to fuse with your jawbone.

Past Gum Disease or Infection

It might be called gum disease, but in severe cases, the oral bacteria can also harm nearby ligaments, soft tissue, and bone. A more general infection can have the same impact, though even if it doesn’t affect your jawbone directly, it could cause damage by attacking nerves or teeth. Basically, you should let your dentist know if either of these conditions are part of your health history.

How Your Dentist Checks Jawbone Density

The best way to know for sure whether you need a bone graft is to schedule a consultation with your dentist. They’ll use an advanced imaging machine called a CT/Cone Beam Scanner to thoroughly evaluate your jawbone. After they inspect your scans, they’ll review their findings with you directly. If it turns out you do need a bone graft – don’t worry! Your implant team will help you build an effective treatment plan so you’ll be able to enjoy dental implants for years to come.
