If you’re missing one or more permanent teeth, and have been considering dental implants, you may be curious to know if you’re a good candidate for treatment. While the only way to know if you qualify for dental implants is to be evaluated in person by your dentist, here are a few qualities that they’re looking for in a dental implant patient.

Your Gums are Healthy

In order to give your dental implants the best odds for success, you’ll need to have healthy gums. That’s because gum disease can cause tooth loss and bone deterioration which could cause them to fail. While having gum disease isn’t a dealbreaker for dental implants, you will need to treat this condition first. Your dentist can discuss your options for gum disease therapy, and once complete, reevaluate your candidacy for dental implants.

You are Committed to Your Oral Health

If you’re unwilling or unable to care for your teeth and gums, your dental implants have a higher chance of failing. That’s because you will be at an increased risk of peri-implantitis, a condition similar to gum disease that is one of the leading causes of dental implant failure. Thus, if you are committed to maintaining an excellent oral hygiene routine complete with regular brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist, you will improve your odds of qualifying for treatment.

You Have Sufficient Bone Density

In order for your dental implants to securely fuse with your jawbone via osseointegration, you’ll need to have a sufficiently thick jawbone. If not, your implants could easily fail. Thus, if your dentist believes you need a stronger foundation, you may require a preliminary procedure such as a sinus lift or bone graft to rebuild your jaw before you can get dental implants.

You Have No Chronic Illnesses

Chronic illnesses like diabetes can increase your odds of dental implant failure. Though diabetic patients still have an impressive 94.3 percent success rate, the percentage for non-diabetic patients is 98 percent. This is because diabetes can increase your risk of gum disease and cavities, as well as slow healing, interfere with the osseointegration process, and even increase glucose levels in the saliva. Thus, if you have diabetes or any other chronic illness, you may not be a good candidate for dental implants if your condition is not well managed.

You Don’t Smoke or Drink Excessively

Smoking or using any kind of tobacco products (yes, including vaping) interferes with the healing process and increases your risk of gum disease. Worse yet, it can contribute to bone loss, making it nearly impossible to place your implants. After surgery, it can create challenges for your soft tissue regeneration and increase your odds of failed osseointegration.

Alcohol consumption can dry out the mouth and cause difficulties clotting at your incision site. Over time, it can also lead to bone deterioration that could cause your dental implants to fail.

Remember, while only your dentist can determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants, it helps to have these five qualities to ensure your treatment is a success.
